The UNLV Department of Art welcomes Mark Newport to the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art on Thursday, November 15, 2018, 7 p.m. for the Fall Visiting Artist Lecture Series.

Mark Newport was born in Amsterdam, NY and attended the Kansas City Art Institute (BFA) and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (MFA). He has presented solo exhibitions at the Chicago Cultural Center; here gallery, Bristol, England; Laumeier Sculpture Park, St. Louis; the Autzen Gallery, Portland State University; and the San Diego State University Art Gallery. Newport’s work has been included in in the prestigious 2009 Renwick Biennial, as well as group exhibitions at the Textile Museum of Canada, The Mint Museum, The Textile Museum at
George Washington University, The Museum of Arts and Design, and the John Michael Kohler Art Center. Recent awards include grants from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, the Creative Capital Foundation, the Kresge Foundation, and the Arizona Commission on the Arts. Newport’s work is in the collections of The Whitney Museum of American Art; The Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Arizona State University Art Museum, the Cranbrook Art Museum, and The Detroit Institute of Arts. The Simone DeSousa Gallery,
Detroit, form and concept in Santa Fe, Duane Reed Gallery of St. Louis, and the Greg Kucera Gallery, Seattle, represent his work. Newport is the Artist-in-Residence and Head of the Fiber Department at the Cranbrook Academy of Art.

The UNLV Visiting Artist Lecture Series features a diverse array of some of the most compelling artists and thinkers working in the art world today. This important program brings both established and emerging artists to visit the campus and discuss their work in public lectures and to offer individual critiques to our BFA and MFA students. This program has established itself as an invaluable resource for UNLV students and the public alike. The primary mission of the UNLV Artist Lecture Series is to educate, inspire and foster a greater understanding and appreciation of contemporary art through visual presentations and discourse.
