NormaJean Kerr was a successful painter for decades, until arthritis stopped her paintbrush many years ago. She didn’t want to see the many unfinished canvases she had in storage continue to collect dust, so she decided to put an ad on Craigslist. She intended to offer her canvases for free to another artist to completely prime over into blank canvases to cover with their own work.
The photographer Sally Marks responded to the ad and brought local Las Vegas artist Robin Slonina 40 paintings with the intention of letting her paint over them. When Slonina saw the work however, she couldn’t bear the thought of covering up NormaJean’s lovely paintings and contacted the artist with a proposition. What would NormaJe...an think of a “collaboration”, where, instead of covering her artwork, Slonina would paint around and over it, layering her contemporary style over NormaJean’s traditional, classic oil paintings? Kerr agreed to this idea, happy her unfinished work would not simply disappear, but be transformed. Slonina enlisted the help of other local Las Vegas artists to participate in the project, and over 25 artists are «finishing» the work NormaJean began.
